A Kiwi by any other name...

Some other names of the kiwi fruit are:

Macaque peach
vine pear
sunny peach
wood berry
wonder fruit
hairy bush fruit

(You can't make this stuff up)

Mike will tell you that the entire fruit is edible, including the skin. Wikipedia will tell you the same thing. Mike will then tell you that Kiwi Fruit tastes really good with the skin on, all fuzzy and fruity. There is no conformation of this from Wikipedia.

Or from anyone else I've ever met.

Mike is quirky and fuzzy (probably my two most favorite things about him); Kiwi's are fuzzy and known by some quirky names (also very high up on the list of why I adore Kiwi's).

If Mike were a fruit, he would be a Kiwi.

Regina Spektor Concert, 11-7-09

On Saturday night (November 7th), my Step-mom, Annette, came down from Lafayette to watch the kids all night for us because I had a big surprise for Mike. I thought for sure he had figured it out. I was trying really hard to throw him off-course, and although he wasn't fooled by any of it (I told him we might be going bowling, that he wouldn't like it, that it was too expensive, etc), he still didn't know what we were really doing.

A Fabulous dinner at Greek Town Cafe on Colfax. We had the lamb, even though Mike's not a vegetarian anymore. (20 thousand fake points up for grabs right there, people.)

Then I drove a ways down Colfax and parked on a scary street a few blocks away from the theater. Meanwhile, Mike (becuase I forced him to) was swearing on deceased relative's graves that he has no clue what we're doing. And here's how I know he was telling the truth: we walked up to the Fillmore and he finally spotted the marquis...

And this was his reaction. He doesn't know the lengths I'd go to just to see that smile.

(Not pictured here is me jumping up and down and screaming that I actually managed to surprise him (he's a smart one; very very sneaky!) and finally being able to show my excitement for the night ahead).

The opening act was a band called Jupiter One. They were pretty good. Check them out if you can.

But what we really wanted was Regina. The concert just wasn't long enough. We could have listened and sang along with her all night. She was beautiful and she sounded even better than she does on her albums, which I didn't think was possible.

Regina and I are pretty much best friends now. We were in the third row and she waved to me. Mike says she winked at him, but I must have missed that.

She played and sang with such intensity, I've really never seen anything like it. To me, she is our generation's Jacqueline DuPre, but instead of a cello she uses her voice, her quirkiness and emotion, a drumstick, a guitar, and brought me near to tears on her Steinway. If I weren't so pumped with adrenaline I'm sure I would have cried because of the beauty and genius of her music.

It was the best night of music, the best concert I've ever been to. And the kicker is that I got to be there with the best person in the world. I'm a lucky, lucky girl.

Blogging is just another way to be rejected

The other day I was whining to several of my friends about how no one reads my blog. Sorry for that. I can't even blame it on hormones. But today I realized the truth about why the lack of readers and comments bothers me so much.

It's because I want to be famous.

(Twenty thousand points to whoever can tell me where I ripped off the title of this post from! And don't try just copying and pasting it in Google. It's a REFERENCE, a SAMPLING. I changed it enough to not be sued for plagiarism...I think.)

J*'s 7th birthday

Due to the very snowy conditions on the day I had scheduled J*'s party, we had to postpone it to his actual birthday, Halloween. The kids got more than their fair share of sugar that day!

In the morning my grandparents stopped by to give J* his birthday present, a water science experiment kit, which he LOVES so much. He begs us to do experiments with him every night.
J* with my grandparents, Ed and Joan.

J* had a Halloween-themed costume party. We had two witches, one iron man, two super Marios and one little girl who refused to wear her cat costume and partied in her pajamas. What kind of parent lets this happen?! If I weren't so nice, I'd give this little girl's mom a piece of my mind about proper party attire.

The kids decorated their own pumpkins, we all got "tattoos" and J* opened all of his presents. He got quite the haul! And he was introduced to some new toys that he'd never played with, but are now among his favorites.
Being crafty with Pumpkins...

The Halloween "tattoos"

The spider cookie cake...

The guests and Birthday boy...

All in all it was a wonderful celebration, even though I did not get a picture of A* in her cat costume on Halloween. I'll have to dress her up in it and pretend I took it on Halloween. (Shh, don't tell anyone.) It's SO fun to have a kid with a birthday on the best holiday of the year! (After Christmas and my birthday).

NCAR Science Fair

Last Saturday I went with the kids to a science fair held at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), where my step-mom works. The kids loved it! They learned about hearing and how different animals hear differently. **Ironically** we could hardly hear the gentleman who was telling us all about it. They also got to play with lots of little science experiments, write with light, spin around on a big turntable and learn about centrifugal force, got free candy, face paintings, and even stood inside of a computer. It was a very fun day!

**I'm never sure If I'm using this word correctly. I know I have at least five...no, wait...ONE reader who knows what this word really means and how to use it the right way. Steve, help me out here, would you?**

The kids loved spinning this "chaos theory" demonstration. Translation: they fought over who got to spin it first, the longest, the fastest, the bestest, etc.

J* trying to get these lights to turn on by spinning a handle. They didn't turn on. Do they give a brown ribbon at science fairs?

The kids standing inside the first Cray computer, built in 1977. Some of my older or geekier readers (and I mean that in the most loving way) might know what the heck this thing is and why it's such a big deal.

J* playing with an echo machine. It makes it so you can't say your alphabet very easily. It was pretty funny to hear him messing up his ABC's. He thought so too, especially when I tried it! I think the words "you sound like a weirdo" were used.

The kids standing outside of NCAR with the Boulder Flatirons in the background. Very pretty, those.

J* with his SUN face painting. This face painting lady was awesome! She did both the kids' faces in about two minutes. Don't they look cool? I still regret not getting my face painted that day. Sigh...regrets are the worst.

A* chose a less scientific theme for hers, a lovely unicorn. With pink hair, of course. What you can't see here is how it sparkled with glitter and diamonds... just like a REAL unicorn.
